The goalkeeping situation at FC Barcelona could see a shock movement in the January window.

Last week, reports emerged that Girona were prepared to go all out to sign Marc-Andre ter Stegen, a story that has gained significant traction in Catalonia.

The interest is real. In fact, Girona manager Michel ratified the club’s pursuit of the German shot-stopper last Monday. However, despite the mutual interest, the operation is fraught with complications.

Girona’s economic problems

The Girona board is fully aware that signing the Barcelona captain is a very difficult option, reports Diario SPORT.

They anticipate that the negotiations will be a long process, potentially dragging on until the very end of January when the transfer window closes.

On the player’s side, the stance is clear. While Ter Stegen wants to exhaust his scarce options to play at Barcelona first, he views a loan move to Girona until the end of the season with good eyes.

All parties are aware that the German international is open to the switch in order to regain continuity.

The main issue, as always, is economic. Girona currently have almost no salary margin to offer a deal that covers a significant portion of Ter Stegen’s high wages.

Hopes that the departure of Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic would solve the issue have been dashed.

Livakovic is looking for a new club, but his salary at Girona was only €300,000, meaning his exit creates negligible room in the budget for a star like Ter Stegen.

Patience will be required, as this deal promises to be far more complicated than initially hoped.
