Liverpool fans have been warned to brace themselves for the exit of yet another long-serving stalwart from Anfield over the summer.

We already know that Mo Salah and Andy Robertson are leaving the club at the end of this season, and another two-time Premier League winner has been the subject of intensifying speculation of late.

Last week, Sky Sports reported that Juventus have made Alisson Becker a ‘top target’ for the summer transfer window, following on from Fabrizio Romano’s claims that a ‘serious approach’ has already been made by the Serie A club.

Wyness: Liverpool likely to let Alisson leave this summer

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness has stated that the 33-year-old is likely to depart this summer, with Liverpool taking the opportunity to reap a fee for him with just over a year remaining on his contract.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think that that is one that’s going to happen. Alisson does fancy that, and it would make sense as well. Liverpool have got the backup there that they’re happy with and Alisson will go.

“This is the last window they’ve got to try and get some value for him. There is value at that age for a good goalkeeper like that. From what I’ve heard from the agents that I know, it does seem that it’s in pretty advanced discussions right now, so I would expect him to be going.”

Liverpool still need Alisson despite injury troubles

Looking at the situation through a pragmatic lens, Liverpool selling Alisson this summer wouldn’t be illogical. He’s approaching the twilight of his career, but still at an age where the club could get a decent fee for him, rather than letting him depart for free in a year’s time.

Also, he’s missed a lot of game-time over the past two seasons due to recurring injury problems, and the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili was very much made with a view to having his long-term successor in place.

However, at a time when the Reds are crying out for leadership on the pitch and in the dressing room, losing the goalkeeper on top of Salah and Robertson would be a major worry, and captain Virgil van Dijk has already called out for new leaders to emerge within the squad.

Furthermore, whilst Alisson hasn’t been on the pitch nearly often enough this season, his goal concession rate and clean sheet record reflect his importance to Liverpool, and he retains a dominant presence which adds a sense of security to the rest of the team.

The fire-sale of last summer would suggest that FSG aren’t averse to cutting players loose when they feel the time is right, but in our view, that isn’t the case with the Brazil international just yet.
