Rennes have signed Portuguese defender Gonçalo Oliveira from Benfica on a five-year contract for about 3.5 million euros. The club said in a statement that the 19-year-old is their third arrival of the summer.
Oliveira joins from Benfica, where he played for the reserve side. He follows Adrien Thomasson and Issa Soumaré through the door.
Managed by Franck Haise, Rennes are reinforcing a back line that conceded 50 goals in Ligue 1 last season, joint seventh-worst with Paris FC.
The left-footed centre-back captained Benfica’s reserves last season, making 24 appearances and scoring two goals.
He also helped the team reach the Youth League semi-finals, where they were beaten 3-1 by Bruges.
