Anthony Gordon's first-half goal gave Newcastle United all three points at Stamford Bridge.
The visitors went into this game without two of their key midfielders, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães, which may be why they didn't see too much of the ball early on.
Indeed, Chelsea had some early opportunities with Cole Palmer fizzing a shot just wide of Aaron Ramsdale's goal.
It was the visitors who took the lead against the run of play though when Tino Livramento played a ball through Joe Willock who was all of a sudden in behind the Chelsea defence and able to square it for Anthony Gordon. The attacker needed one touch before prodding past Roberto Sánchez.
From that point on, Newcastle sat back and looked to hit on the break meaning that the Blues had the ball in plenty of good areas but struggled to find the finishing touch and went into the break with boos from the home supporters.
Liam Rosenior made one change at the break with Liam Delap coming on for Malo Gusto. The substitute almost had an instant impact with his strong strike forcing Ramsdale into a solid stop.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with Chelsea having plenty of the ball and Newcastle looking to pick their moment, like Gordon's curling shot that Sánchez palmed away.
Delap's introduction certainly gave Chelsea a focus with the striker heading just wide from Palmer's cross with five minutes remaining.
Chelsea came even closer from a set-piece into stoppage time as Reece James stood over a freekick and bent it beyond the reach of Ramsdale but then saw the ball bounce off the post and out.
The visitors managed to hold out in the end with their defence able to keep Chelsea at bay.
