Gorriarán completes Tigres UANL comeback to seal Quarterfinals

SAN NICOLÁS DE LOS GARZA, Mexico – The 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup continued with Tigres UANL winning 5-1 against FC Cincinnati in the Second Leg of their Round of 16 series, with the Mexican side winning 5-4 on aggregate, on Thursday at Estadio Universitario in San Nicolás de los Garza, Mexico.
FC Cincinnati entered the match with a 3-nil lead after its victory at home in the first leg.
The hosts immediately took to the scoresheet in the 5’, with Rodrigo Aguirre striking from close range. Jesús Garza posted the assist with a grounded pass from the right end of the box.
Ozziel Herrera added a second for Tigres in the 10’, receiving a pass from Juan Brunneta down the left wing before breaking into the box and curling the ball to the far post.
Herrera sealed his brace in the 46’ with a rocket from outside the box into the top-left corner to tie the aggregate at 3-3.
Aguirre scored his second of the night in the 49’ with a spectacular volley inside the box to place Tigres in the lead in the series. Herrera delivered the cross on the play.
Kévin Denkey headed home a free kick delivered into the box by Evander in the 65’, shortening the deficit for Cincinnati in the match, and tying the aggregate at 4-4 to momentarily give the MLS side the advantage on away goals.
Fernando Gorriarán secured the comeback and the series in the dramatic fashion with a powerful right-footed hit from outside the box in the 90’+8’. André-Pierre Gignac set up the Uruguayan to earn the series-winning assist.
Tigres UANL advances to the Quarterfinals, where it will face reigning Leagues Cup champions Seattle Sounders FC.

• Fernando Gorriarán’s goal at 97:54 is Tigres UANL’s latest goal in the Concacaf Champions Cup since at least 2017, surpassing Nahuel Guzmán’s strike against Alianza in 2020 (93:43).
• With five goals scored tonight, Tigres UANL reached 121 goals in the Concacaf Champions Cup since 2008, ranking as the third-highest scoring Mexican club in that span, behind Cruz Azul (170) and Monterrey (141).
• André-Pierre Gignac (Tigres UANL), who came on in the second half, assisted Fernando Gorriarán’s winning goal. At 40 years and 104 days, he became the oldest player to record an assist in the competition since at least 2017.
• With goals from Rodrigo Aguirre (5’) and Ozziel Herrera (10’), Tigres UANL became the second team to score twice within the first 10 minutes of a match in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup. The first was Philadelphia against Defence Force.
• Two Tigres UANL players recorded three direct goal contributions in the match: Ozziel Herrera (2G 1A) and Rodrigo Aguirre (2G 1A). Both lead the team in goal involvements in this edition, with Aguirre totaling five (4G 1A) and Herrera three (2G 1A).
• With his goal tonight, Kévin Denkey (FC Cincinnati) reached six direct goal contributions in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup (4G 2A), leading the team. It was the first time he scored in the competition, and his team did not win (W3 D1).
• Evander, who assisted Denkey’s goal, recorded his second assist in the Concacaf Champions Cup. His first came in his debut, in a 4-1 win against Motagua.
