Graham Potter has been appointed as the new head coach of the Sweden national team, marking a surprise return to the dugout less than a month after his dismissal from West Ham United, BBC Sport reports.
The 50-year-old Englishman has signed a short-term deal designed to steer Sweden through the final stages of their World Cup qualification campaign, as the Scandinavian nation battles to salvage a place at next summer’s tournament.
“I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired,” Potter said following his appointment. “Sweden has fantastic players competing in the best leagues in the world. My job is to create the conditions for them to perform at their highest level and take Sweden to the World Cup.”
Sweden turned to Potter after parting ways with Jon Dahl Tomasson in the wake of a 1-0 defeat to Kosovo, which left automatic qualification mathematically out of reach. However, their Nations League success last season means a playoff route remains open.
Potter retains deep ties to Swedish football, having achieved a remarkable rise with Östersund, guiding the club from the fourth tier to the Allsvenskan and European competition.
