Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has marked the first anniversary of his arrival with a heartfelt message to supporters on social media.
The Swiss midfielder joined on 30 July last year and has become central to a side that finished seventh in the Premier League, sealing Europa League qualification.
Earlier this summer it appeared he could depart, with recently appointed Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso identifying him as a key midfield target. The 33-year-old has instead chosen to remain on Wearside with the new season less than a month away.
Posting a collage on Instagram, soundtracked by Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love, Xhaka reflected that a year had flown by, praised what has been built together, expressed gratitude for the challenges and moments, and said he is ready to go again.
Head coach Regis Le Bris has since called the transfer talk closed, stating that Xhaka loves Sunderland, wants to stay and help shape the club’s future, and lauded him as a good captain and leader.
