Juan Nardoni could open a fresh tilt at foreign recruits for Grêmio on Wednesday, potentially debuting against Atlético-MG in the Brasileirão at the Arena. Leonel Pérez is not yet available, and neither Argentine is registered for the Gauchão. According to Globo.com, the club are resetting after recent overseas bets faltered.
Grêmio are working to move on Cristaldo and Cuéllar in the coming days, via contract termination or, for the midfielder, a loan. Both were given opportunities by Luís Castro but did not convince in training and matches. They would join a list that already includes Aravena, Arezo, Carballo and Kike Olivera.
The board have paused searches for further foreign signings to trim numbers. There are 13 overseas players at present, including Kannemann, who has begun the process of securing Brazilian citizenship and would no longer take up a foreign slot. CBF competitions allow a maximum of nine foreign players per match.
Nardoni, 23, arrived from Racing as one of the costliest deals in the club’s history. The transfer cost US$ 8 million, R$ 41.7 million, for 80% of his economic rights, with a further US$ 2 million, R$ 10.4 million, in bonuses tied to targets.
Pérez, 21, is another Argentine midfielder, signed from Huracán for US$ 2.8 million, R$ 14.5 million. He will not be available for Wednesday’s 21:30 kick-off as he adapts to the training load.
