Antoine Griezmann etched his name in Atletico Madrid history books after he scored his 200th goal for the club during the 5-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League.
Coming off a sensational 5-2 win against Real Madrid, Atletico wreaked havoc on the German underdogs with a dominant performance.
Giacomo Raspadori found an early lead through Giuliano Simeone’s cut-back, and Robin Le Normand doubled it up following a tap-in from close range.
Griezmann netted his milestone goal in the added time of the first half after Julian Alvarez teed him up following a great run on the left flank.
Jonathan Burkardt pulled one back for the visitors, but Simeone headed home Atletico’s fourth of the evening from Alvarez’s corner kick.
Alvarez wrapped up the game with a penalty, as Diego Simeone’s side opened their account in UCL following the 3-2 defeat against Liverpool in the opener.
On the other hand, Frankfurt received a taste of their own medicine after their triumphant 5-1 win against Galatasaray.
Being the all-time top scorer of Atletico, Griezmann also became the first player ever in the club’s history to reach 200 goals.
The Frenchman endured a rocky start to the new season, slipping down the pecking order under Simeone and enduring a long goal drought. But he broke the duck in the Madrid derby over the weekend and has now scored for the second consecutive game.
Meanwhile, Alvarez has been in prolific form this season, bagging six goals and two assists in the last three games in all competitions.
Atletico’s form appeared to be plummeting after just one win in six games, but they have now recorded three victories on the trot, while scoring 13 goals in the process.
