Pep Guardiola says he’s pleased with the progress his new look City side have made, but insisted we still have a lot of work to do.

City are in a fine run of form, winning our last six games across all competitions and 13 of our last 16 matches.

That has taken us to second in the Premier League, just two points off leaders Arsenal, and handily placed in the Champions League league phase.

We’re also through to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup for the first time since we last won it in 2021.

With changes throughout the squad in the last 12 months, Guardiola admits he’s surprised by how well his team are performing.

Speaking in his press conference on Friday before this weekend’s visit of struggling West Ham, Guardiola compared this team to his great City sides who have dominated English football for large parts of his nine-and-a-half years here.

“They are a little bit younger,” he began.

“When Bernardo came for example, he was a player that won the French league with Monaco and he was an important player.

“Many players came but these will need a bit more. Process is a bit slower because they need time to settle.

“That’s why I’m surprised we are in the position we are.

“In terms of belief, the most important thing is to say ‘okay we are us and we are going to play who we are’. Still we are not in that position.”

Guardiola went on to explain what he’s worked on with his side in recent weeks and the improvements he’s seen.

The boss specifically pointed to the improved goal contributions from across the pitch, as well as seeing his side win more duels.

The boss says chasing that continuous improvement is a key part of his motivation for working as hard as possible day in day out.

“When I see a pattern we have to improve, I wake up and know I can make the team better,” he said.

“If we are doing that, being more solid and winning games, that is the main reason.

“My relationship with the team and backroom staff is massively important. If it’s a war every day, I go home. I want to be happy coming here. In terms of football, we can be better.

“The moment I feel the players can’t squeeze more or I can’t do better, I go home.

“When I see Brentford, one detail we have to improve because there are things that happened last month where we talk and be better, that makes me happy.

“We are scoring more goals. Before it was just Erling and now we have more and players and have more assists up front. We were losing long balls all the time and now we are winning more second balls.

“Still the build up is still not really good and we can play better, have more courage to play and there are more details that still we have to work on.

“Defensively not aggressive enough not doing perfect what we are working and talking. No complaining or regret, reason why we still manage to do it better.

“When it happens we’ll be close. In the Champions League against Madrid, I’m so happy to win that game but with that level we can’t win in the latter stages.”
