Manchester City are working on a marquee signing for next season despite uncertainty over Guardiola’s future. According to Superdeporte, they held talks in the summer over Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.

The 23-year-old is enjoying an outstanding Premier League campaign. He has cemented a starting role under Thomas Tuchel with the national team and is expected to start at the next World Cup.

Anderson leads the league for completed passes, forward passes, short passes and progressive passes. He also tops precise deliveries into the final third and successful crosses.

He ranks first for duels won, touches, progressive actions and fouls won. The data underline his control of tempo and verticality.

Forest paid €42 million for him last season, complicating any exit. They are unwilling to negotiate below €93 million, while interest from Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Manchester United is pushing his price up.

City would be willing to go as high as €115 million. For family reasons, Anderson would welcome a move to one of the two Manchester clubs, around 130 kilometres from Nottingham, with City his preference.

Born in England, he first represented Scotland at youth level through a grandmother’s passport. Tuchel has since found in Anderson the organiser England lacked after the dip of Kalvin Philipps.

With Anderson in midfield, England produced an almost perfect qualifying run, six matches, six wins, 18 goals for and none conceded. It reflects a maturing group with the Forest man as reference point.
