Pep Guardiola believes it will be difficult to improve his Manchester City squad in the January transfer window.
City are on a run of one win in 11 games in all competitions and are fifth in the Premier League table going into Saturday’s clash with Aston Villa.
But Guardiola gave a cautious response when asked about the possibility of addressing his side’s struggles by making signings in January.
“We spoke and we talk, in winter if we are going to do something it is because we really need it or we believe we can find something,” he said. “Not just for four or five months but exceptional things for the next three or four (years).
“In winter it is more difficult to do but we will see. I don’t know how many times in the last years we signed someone in the winter.
“We are not a big fan of that but the circumstances this season are special and have been special and we have to see if we have to do something.
“If not, we’re going to wait until the summer thinking about how we finished the season, how the players finished, how they performed knowing again we will have a short holiday next summer and next year we will have to see what we have to do.
“We will talk and see what is possible in the market and maybe it won’t be possible. We’ll see.”
Guardiola added that the reluctance for teams to sell midway through the season makes January more difficult.
“It’s not easy to do that,” he explained. “The teams don’t sell.
“It has to be maybe players who don’t play. The ones they don’t want to sell are so expensive. It depends on the market, on the situation and we will see.
“The relief is (getting) players back (from injury). Except Rodri, having the squad there. After that we will be the team like we were.”
