Guatemala concludes World Cup Qualifying with win, Suriname heads to Play-Off

GUATEMALA CITY – The Final Round of the Concacaf Qualifiers to the 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded with Guatemala winning 3-1 against Suriname in Group A on Tuesday at Estadio El Trébol in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
After a scoreless first half, Darwin Lom broke the deadlock in the 49’ to place Guatemala in the lead by connecting with a header on a cross from Óscar Santis.
Olger Escobar doubled the Guatemala lead in the 57’ with a thundering left-footed shot from the left side of the box.
Óscar Santis added a third for Los Chapines in the 65’ with a left-footed shot to capitalize on a fast break opportunity.
A cross into the box from Suriname’s Sheraldo Becker led to a Nicolás Samayoa own goal, placing the Caribbean side back into the FIFA Play-Off Tournament on goal difference.
Guatemala concludes the Final Round with a 2-2-2 record finish third place in the group.
Suriname falls to second place in the group with a 2-3-1 record and kept its World Cup hopes alive as one of the best second place teams of the Final Round.
