Guehi calls on England to stay positive despite Japan defeat | OneFootball

Marc Guehi has called on England to stay positive despite their 1-0 defeat to Japan at Wembley.

England were beaten by Japan on home soil in the final friendly before Thomas Tuchel names his squad for this summer’s World Cup.

A difficult evening as presented questions for the England manager, as he looks to fine-tune his team for the 2026 tournament. Kaoru Mitoma got the only goal of the game for the Japanese, with England struggling to break down their visitors in the absence of Harry Kane.

Guehi, who captained the team in Kane’s absence, said England must self-reflect but urged the squad to stick together and remain positive.

“We have to be critical of ourselves but again these are the tests that we need,” the Manchester City centre-back said.

“It is important to have these games to see where we are at, but it is all about perspective, making sure we learn and we stick together.

“It is easy to look at this one game, especially after the campaign that we’ve had. It’s been positive, so it’s important that we stick together and get better.

“We actually had a lot of chances today from set pieces and created what we could but we couldn’t find the back of the net.

“It is important we stay positive, stick behind each other and stick together.

“It’s not easy putting the shirt on. You play against teams that are well drilled and disciplined. They qualified for the World Cup as well and they want to prove a point when they come here.

“I will reiterate, it is important that we stick together, learn from this moment and move forward.”
