‘Guilty of that’ – Paul Scholes lays into Manchester United star for repeated errors

Paul Scholes took aim at Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot after his former side drew 1-1 with Fenerbahce in the Europa League.

As we’ve seen time and time again this season, United failed to take advantage of going ahead in a European tie.

Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce side held United to a 1-1 draw after a lapse in concentration cost the Reds for Youssef En-Nesyri’s 49th minute equaliser. It was not only enough to cancel out Christian Eriksen’s opener but it secured a point for the Turkish side.

Onana, who performed brilliantly, pulled off a double save in the first half. He could do nothing about Fenerbahce’s goal as the Moroccan rose well to head home a cross from Allan Saint-Maximin.

Dalot attempted to track Saint-Maximin but allowed him to cut inside before getting space to cross the ball.

United legend Scholes was critical of Dalot’s defending for the goal and said the Portugal international is often ‘guilty’ of allowing wingers too much room in dangerous areas.

“I think Dalot’s guilty of that quite a bit,” Scholes said on TNT Sports, as quoted by The Metro. “You know exactly what Saint-Maximin is going to do in that situation.

“He [Dalot] needs to show more urgency, get out to him because you know they’ve got a dangerous player in the box.

“It’s a great ball in and he’s not going to miss from there, but Dalot doesn’t do that enough.

“He’s been okay, one of the better players for United this season, but he needs to get that side of his game right.

“You have to stop that at source otherwise they’re going to score because he’s a real threat.”

It feels like two points for United who have repeatedly thrown away games in Europe this season. FC Twente and FC Porto were there for the taking, like Fenerbahce were tonight.

Scholes went on to add that he thought it was a decent draw for United on the night, considering they travelled to Turkey to take on a side managed by Mourinho.

“The two results you have to say: Porto away, tough place to go, good draw. Fenerbahce away, good draw. It’s the home game that was really disappointing, the Twente game, you should be beating those teams.

“They’re in a terrible position in that Europa League, they’ve got to start winning games soon.”
