Ruud Gullit has weighed in on the recent management of AC Milan which he believes lacks a direction, something the Rossoneri must rediscover before choosing the head coach.

Currently in 9th place, it’s clear that the season hasn’t gone according to plan for Milan. The Rossoneri are still ‘only’ six points behind top four after two good results, but without the hiccups along the way, they could have been comfortably in the top four.

In his interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, which was published this morning, the legendary Milan midfielder Gullit weighed in on the situation. Before choosing a coach, as he made very clear, the Rossoneri need to find a direction at the management level.

How would you solve the problem?

“As PSG did, when they stopped buying stars, they took a coach, Luis Enrique, with a brilliant playing philosophy and valorised the youth sector. Another example is Liverpool, who replaced Klopp with a coach with the same philosophy, and Slot is winning the Premier League. Milan need to rediscover their roots, their DNA. Success cannot be bought, but must be sought with work and the right choices.”

Would we need a coach like Conte or Allegri?

“I don’t know who the right choice is. What matters is hiring a coach who fits the club’s identity, whatever that may be. Inter, for example, has its own philosophy and a clear playing system, a coach who puts it into practice to perfection and elements suited to the 3-5-2. Milan must rediscover their DNA and find a direction at the management level before even thinking about the right manager.”

Work is currently underway to identify the next sporting director, with Giovanni Manna the latest candidate, and Giorgio Furlani has taken a lot of the responsibility. The CEO has made it very clear that he will have the final say from now on.
