Chemsdine Talbi’s World Cup cameo for Morocco against Brazil sparked a playful exchange as Guy Mowbray nudged Alan Shearer into praising Sunderland.
Sunderland Echo reports that the on-air back and forth came during the Group C fixture.
The Sunderland winger was introduced in the second half. He has just completed an impressive first year with the club back in the Premier League.
Under Régis Le Bris, Sunderland finished seventh and qualified for Europe. Talbi also etched his name into recent Wearside folklore by scoring the equaliser at St James’ Park in a victory over Newcastle United.
Talbi’s appearance prompted Mowbray to stress Sunderland’s presence at the tournament, noting 12 Black Cats are involved, two more than Real Madrid’s contingent.
Shearer joked that Mowbray sounded like a Sunderland supporter, Mowbray replied he was simply inviting North East insight, and Shearer accepted Sunderland had enjoyed a great season. Mowbray quipped that the compliment arrived without gritted teeth.
