The man who opened the scoring for Manchester City in their 2-0 victory over Napoli in the Champions League, Erling Haaland has reached a historic milestone by scoring 50 goals in the tournament.
No player in the history of the Champions League has needed fewer matches than Haaland to reach 50 goals. In last night's match, Haaland completed his 49th appearance in the Champions League. The Norwegian takes just 79 minutes on average to score in Europe's top tournament.
To give an idea of the magnitude of Haaland's achievement, until now, Ruud van Nistelrooy was the player who had reached 50 goals in the fewest games: 62.
Lionel Messi needed 66 matches, Robert Lewandowski 77, and Kylian Mbappé 79. Cristiano Ronaldo took even longer: 91 games to reach his 50th goal.
Yesterday marked six years since Haaland's Champions League debut, which he kicked off with a hat-trick against Genk for Red Bull Salzburg. In the competition, the striker has scored 8 goals for the Austrian side, 15 for Borussia Dortmund, and 27 for Manchester City.
With 50 goals, Haaland has now matched Thierry Henry as the ninth all-time top scorer in the history of the Champions League. Cristiano Ronaldo is at the top of the list with 140, followed by Lionel Messi with 129, and Lewandowski with 105.
Still just 25 years old, Haaland has plenty of time to catch up...
