Olympique de Marseille ended Habib Beye’s tenure on Tuesday, clearing the way for Bruno Genesio to take charge on a two-year contract. According to L'Équipe, a full agreement is in place with the 59-year-old after a month-long saga.
Talks with Genesio were advanced in early June, then dragged amid UEFA and DNCG hearings. On 17 June Marseille learned they would stay in the Europa League, receiving a €10m fine and an obligation to finish the window in profit.
After two seasons at Lille, Genesio will arrive with assistants Jérémie Bréchet and Dimitri Farbos, goalkeeping coach Nicolas Dehon and performance lead Thomas Choinard. A final contractual point with sporting director Grégory Lorenzi was settled late last week.
Beye, appointed in February on a deal to 2027, did not meet owner Frank McCourt’s targets of winning the Coupe de France and securing a Ligue 1 podium, and Marseille finished fifth. Sporting director Medhi Benatia, who hired him, has since left. A brief statement ended Beye’s short spell and offered thanks and good wishes.
There is a dispute over his severance and the club are prepared to proceed unilaterally. With the wage bill restricted and time short, Genesio’s arrival is expected to be formalised quickly. He will be present when training resumes on 6 July, with sales now Lorenzi’s priority to balance the books and several coveted players potentially available.
