Marseille’s hunt for a new manager has stalled amid boardroom upheaval, leaving Habib Beye waiting without any guarantee. According to L'Équipe, the former Rennes coach had been leading the race to replace Roberto De Zerbi but must now wait for a new hierarchy to be set.

Since De Zerbi’s exit after the 0-5 defeat by PSG on 8 February, Pancho Abardonado has taken interim charge, as he did in September 2023. Then he oversaw two matches. This time he has started with a 2-2 draw against Strasbourg on Saturday.

He said his staff are ready to run training all week and handle the Brest match on Friday.

Beye’s arrival had appeared close and Abardonado looked set to return to an assistant role. Medhi Benatia’s resignation on Sunday has made matters less clear, as he had initiated the contacts and is no longer in place to conclude them. Beye’s camp spent Sunday and Monday waiting while uncertainty persists over owner Frank McCourt’s intentions and the future of Pablo Longoria.

Longoria knows Beye’s agency, Classico, which gives grounds to hope his candidacy will not be harmed by Benatia’s exit. The current pause does not mean talks have collapsed. Beye is due at the LFP legal commission on Tuesday afternoon regarding his dispute with Stade Rennais, who dismissed him on 9 February.
