Dietmar Hamann has sharply criticized FC Bayern’s salary policy. In his new book, the former international takes particular aim at Jamal Musiala and Munich’s contract strategy
Hamann’s new book „Der Spielverderber – 45 ungeschminkte Wahrheiten von Deutschlands ehrlichstem Fußballexperten“, which he wrote together with journalist Oliver Fritsch, will be published at the end of May. Even before publication, the first excerpts are already causing discussion – especially on Säbener Straße
Hamann sees a fundamental problem in FC Bayern’s contract negotiations and puts his finger deep into the wound
The 52-year-old is particularly critical of the balance of power in negotiations with players and their entourage: „Sometimes I get the impression that at Real, Barcelona, PSG, Liverpool and City, the club decides, while at FC Bayern it’s the advisors who decide. Or whoever,“ writes Hamann
The former Bayern professional cites the protracted talks with Dayot Upamecano and the departure of Leroy Sané to Galatasaray Istanbul as examples. „Bayern wanted to extend Leroy Sané’s contract and gave him until August. But he preferred to go to the Turkish league. It was the player who made the decision,“ says Hamann
The TV pundit is particularly clear on the subject of Jamal Musiala. According to Hamann, the international’s salary is significantly higher than previously publicly assumed. „The most striking example is Jamal Musiala. His contract does not provide for 25 million euros, as has been rumoured, but as far as I know up to 30 million euros a year, plus consultancy fees,“ Hamann claims
For the former international, this sum is problematic for a 22-year-old. „I think that’s far too much for a 22-year-old,“ he continues

Hamann generally sees a dangerous development at the record champions, citing Joshua Kimmich, Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano as examples
Kimmich has extended his contract „on the same terms“, while Upamecano is said to have been offered around €20 million a year, according to Hamann. In Davies‘ case, he criticizes the long-term contract term until 2030 and the high salary
For Hamann, FC Bayern is sending the wrong signals to the market: „Of course, word is getting around among advisors,“ he writes
At the same time, Hamann believes that Musiala’s role within the team has taken on a new dimension as a result of the mega-contract: „In the dressing room, he is no longer seen as a talent who should be looked down on, but as a top earner who has to deliver,“ says the former midfielder
Musiala had recently fought his way back from a long injury and scored three goals and provided four assists in 14 appearances last season.
