Harry Gray has ended his six-month spell at Rotherham and posted a brief Instagram farewell, and will now return to Leeds United, according to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk. He thanked everyone at the Millers and wished them well for the future.

The 17-year-old joined on a half-season deal in January to gain senior EFL minutes with opportunities limited as Leeds fought Premier League survival. He started 20 League One games and scored three goals.

Rotherham were relegated to League Two last month. Gray nevertheless caught the eye, supplying an assist in Saturday’s 3-2 final-day defeat at Wycombe.

He arrived in the thick of a relegation battle and struck two goals in his first four outings.

A hamstring strain in March sent him back to Thorp Arch for treatment. He missed around three weeks before rejoining the Millers in early April.

By then Matt Hamshaw, who brought him in, had been sacked and Gray continued to impress under Lee Clark. He scored in a potentially important 2-0 win over Leyton Orient, but it only delayed the drop.

He kept close ties to boyhood club Leeds, seen in the away end at Old Trafford for April’s historic 2-1 win, and later at Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final loss to Chelsea. Talks over next season will begin soon, and with Leeds all but securing Premier League status after Friday’s 3-1 win over Burnley, another loan could help maintain his minutes.
