The Harry Kane v Kylian Mbappé debate among England fans reignited on Wednesday after Kane’s late double beat DR Congo 2-1 and sealed a last-16 spot.

According to L'Équipe, supporters were asked to pick between the two captains as the argument intensified.

The Bayern Munich forward now has five at this World Cup and 13 overall, level with Just Fontaine in sixth on the all-time list.

Mbappé remains narrowly ahead in this edition with six, having scored twice in France’s 3-0 win over Sweden, and his World Cup tally stands at 18.

Opinions on the streets varied sharply. Some argued Kane is the superior finisher, others leaned on patriotism, and a few dismissed Mbappé as overrated while insisting Kane could deliver the World Cup.

Many, though, sided with Mbappé, pointing to his pace, end product and early honours, plus a habit of leading France on the biggest nights. The mood, ultimately, reflected respect for Mbappé and a hope that this tournament becomes Kane’s.
