Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has insisted that Manchester United would be best served by using Harry Maguire as a striker for the rest of the season.

United have endured a wretched season that currently has them in 14th place in the Premier League table. United are on course for their worst-ever top-flight campaign on points tally, but there was cause to celebrate on Thursday as the team staged a dramatic comeback against Lyon in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie.

The Red Devils were in control before Lyon hit back with four straight goals, two of which were scored in extra time.

It looked as though United were on the verge of a humiliating exit from the competition, but on one of the most dramatic nights at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim’s side struck three times in six minutes to level the score and snatch victory just moments before a looming penalty shoot-out, with the often-criticised Harry Maguire netting the winner.

Maguire’s headed finish sparked wild scenes inside the Theatre of Dreams.

For the final minutes of the game, Maguire played up front alongside Kobbie Mainoo – a tactical switch that worked a treat as both players got on the score sheet to book United’s place in the last four.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Redknapp insisted that he would deploy Maguire in the striker role for the rest of the season.

“Do you know what I would do? I’d stick with Harry Maguire up front.”

“I would, I swear. He gets on the end of things, he’s a target. I’d work with him there for the next couple of weeks. They haven’t got anybody. The other boy [Hojlund] can’t score a goal.”

Redknapp added, “I’d get him on diagonals. I’d get people around him. He’d be like a Crouchy [Peter Crouch] or something.”

“He’s unstoppable in the air. We’ve seen it over the years. I think Maguire could do a job short term.”

Despite Redknapp’s comments, Amorim maintained that Maguire’s long-term role is not as an attacking player, though he made it clear he won’t hesitate to push the defender forward if the situation demands it.
