Harry Winks is closing in on a move to Cagliari, which will shift a big wage off the books for Leicester City as they prepare for life in League One.
Leicester City are gearing up for a huge summer as they look to rebuild and win promotion back to the Championship under Russell Martin.
Bringing in a new boss was the priority following relegation, and with Martin now in place, the hierarchy will begin work on giving him players that suit his specific style of play.
But, successive relegations were always going to have major financial ramifications, so Leicester will need to ship players out in order to balance the books, and it would be no surprise if it was a hectic summer for the Midlands outfit.
When it comes to moving individuals on, it’s fair to say that Harry Winks would be high on the list for who Leicester fans want to depart, and the midfielder will no doubt want a fresh start as well.

Winks enjoyed a fine first season at the club, starring for Enzo Maresca’s side as they won the Championship title. However, the past two years have been much more difficult, for the midfielder and the club.
The ex-Spurs man became a symbol for Leicester’s failure, as he struggled on the pitch, and many view Winks as an example of the mistakes that the club have made in the market in recent years, which have been responsible for their demise.
As well as struggling on the pitch, Winks’ wages became a talking point with the Foxes, as there have been some estimates claiming that he was on £90,000 a week, which reinforced the idea that he was a major transfer error from the club.
Yet, it appears that figure has been exaggerated, as The Athletic have stated that Winks’ actual weekly wage is ‘less than half’ of that.
Furthermore, like other players in the squad, that salary will have been cut once again following Leicester’s relegation to the third tier.
Obviously, it’s unfair to criticise Winks, or any other player, for the money they receive, as he was offered a contract and accepted it.
Nevertheless, even with another wage drop, he is going to be on a big salary by League One standards, and it’s quite clear that all parties would benefit from a summer move amid interest from Cagliari.
That would give Winks the chance to return to a country he has played in before, after a spell with Sampdoria, and you could argue that a more technical division will suit his skill-set.
From Leicester’s perspective, it’s about trying to start again under Martin, who will want to transform the mood around the club, which won’t be easy after two relegations, as the fans are understandably furious at the decline in recent years.

To do that, he will need to ship out most of the players who have been part of that failure, and, instead, give opportunities to the younger lads, as well as bringing in more signings who aren’t associated with previous struggles.
For Winks and Leicester, it’s a shame how the past two years have gone, and the player will no doubt acknowledge he has made some mistakes in his behaviour towards the supporters on occasion.
Now, though, it’s about securing a move away, and whilst Winks may not be on the mega-money that has been reported, removing his salary from the wage bill will be very beneficial for Leicester as they look to back Martin in the window.
