„Has a special role“: Why Bayern have extended Gnabry’s contract | OneFootball

At FC Bayern, personnel decisions are not only based on numbers. Before the Bundesliga match against TSG Hoffenheim, those responsible have now explained why Serge Gnabry is a long-term player. It was not just about sporting aspects, but also about factors off the pitch.

During the press conference before the game against Hoffenheim, coach Vincent Kompany commented on Serge Gnabry’s recently completed contract extension. The Bayern coach particularly emphasised the importance of the attacking player within the team: „Serge has often proven his qualities. He is also very important in the dressing room. He has a special role, even off the pitch. I value his role very highly.“ Kompany also believes that Gnabry „can continue what he has shown recently in the coming years“.

The German international had extended his contract, which was originally due to expire, ahead of schedule, thereby committing himself to the record champions for the long term. For Munich, this is a deliberate signal in their squad planning, as Gnabry continues to be one of the established forces in attack despite competition from other players.

Eberl explains the decision – and the difference to Goretzka

Head of Sport Max Eberl also commented and put the extension in a broader context, drawing a direct comparison with Leon Goretzka, whose contract will not be extended: „These are decisions that have to do with the squad. They are the same age and came at the same time, but they are not twins [lacht].“ Eberl went on to say that the main deciding factors were the different roles and positions.

With regard to Gnabry, the 52-year-old made it clear why the attacking player was chosen: „We had to make decisions regarding their positions. We are very happy that we were able to extend Serge’s contract.“ In midfield, however, the situation was different. „We have very strong players in midfield. We had very open and transparent talks with Leon. Then we agreed that we would part ways in the summer.“

Gnabry has been one of the defining faces at Säbener Straße for many years. His versatility in attack, combined with experience and internal standing, continues to make him valuable to the club. Under Kompany, the 30-year-old is a permanent fixture and can fill several roles.
