Few French prospects burned as brightly as Hatem Ben Arfa in his early teens. According to L'Équipe, he joined Clairefontaine’s INF in 1999 before turning 12, drawing the gaze of leading clubs and cameras alike.
He was admitted a year early, skipping the usual trials to enter at the final stage, when only 40 candidates remained from nearly 1,000. He became the first, and remains the only, player fast-tracked in the INF’s history.
His arrival coincided with the filming of À la Clairefontaine, a docu-series on the academy. With youthful charm and sharp patter, he swiftly became its central figure, bluffing to approach Lilian Thuram and Marcel Desailly, pocketing Zidane’s gloves, and voicing wary thoughts about clubs courting him for their own interests.
In 2002 he joined Lyon’s academy at 15, carrying a heavy reputation shaped by the series and a notorious clash with Abou Diaby. Team-mate Ricardo Faty believes the programme counted against him, and that he suffered from a poor image on arrival.
At Lyon, relations sometimes frayed with senior players, while his magic tricks fed a perception of individualism. A long read examines the enduring mystery around Ben Arfa, from early star status to life in padel, and the career swings and disputes that followed.
