West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo says that Lucas Paqueta is “suffering”, “disappointed and upset” after getting himself sent off against Liverpool at the weekend.

The midfielder received two bookings in quick succession for dissent by referee Darren England, before taking to social media to say he is still being penalised and affected by accusations of spot-fixing offences, for which he was found not guilty by an independent regulatory commission.

“It’s ridiculous to have your life and career affected for two years without any psychological support from the federation,” Paqueta posted on X.

“Perhaps this ridiculous behaviour is just a reflection of everything I’ve had to endure and, it seems, have to continue enduring! I’m sorry if I’m not perfect.”

The Brazilian will miss Wednesday’s clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford with a one-game suspension.

Nuno revealed that Paqueta apologised for his tantrum and said he will be provided assistance by West Ham following the incident and his statement. He added that the player will be back in the team for this weekend’s trip to Brighton.

“I spoke with Lucas, and he spoke not only with me but with all his teammates,” he said in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

“First of all he apologised. He’s aware of his mistake. But we as a club, first and foremost protect our own and solve things among ourselves.

“It was clear that everyone understood that in life everybody is aware that mistakes can happen inside the football pitch.

“Sometimes the emotions sometimes, you can’t control them, but at the same time everybody has a chance [to make up for it].

“So we move forward, Lucas will be out of the game against Man Utd but he will be involved in the next one.”

Nuno continued: “He is not okay. He is suffering. He is disappointed and upset. But he realises the mistake that he made and he is willing to move forward. This is what sometimes people are not aware of the problems that football players endure. But Lucas I think is going to overcome this situation.

“I think it [the investigation] is affecting him but he is willing to move forward, to try and put this aside and continue to play football in the way that he does.

“What I can assure you is that here at the club we have all the support that the players need. We have processes in the club that help and we are willing to provide assistance here in the club.”
