Legendary Brazilian striker Ronaldo gave a wide-ranging interview to L’Equipe, in which he acknowledges France striker Kylian Mbappé (27) as one of the greatest players in football today. The Real Madrid centre-forward overtook Ronaldo for World Cup goals following his brace against Iraq. Mbappé has already logged four goals in this World Cup, taking his World Cup tally to 16, three goals short of Lionel Messi’s outright record.
Ronaldo previously held this record, until Germany’s Miroslav Klose overtook him in 2014. “All records are made to be broken. Football is ultimately more than just numbers. You also have to think about the legacy you leave behind”, Ronaldo said. The 1994 and 2002 World Cup winner considers that both Messi and Mbappé are both players hugely deserving to be the World Cup’s all-time top scorers.
Ronaldo, who took world football by storm in the 90’s through his unprecedented blend of pace, power and clinical finishing, sees similarities between him and the France captain. “As for Mbappé, his playing style reminds me of myself at my peak. He is one of the greatest players in football today and a natural heir to the legends of the game.”
