Brennan Johnson says he is delighted for the Spurs fans and his manager Ange Postecoglou after winning the club’s first trophy since 2008.
Johnson’s first-half goal was enough to hand Spurs victory over Manchester United in Bilbao, which has also won them a place in next season’s Champions League.
“I’m so happy right now, honestly,” the Welshman told TNT Sports after the game.
“This season hasn’t been good enough at all but not one of us players care about that right now.
“This is what it’s all about. This club hasn’t won a trophy for 17 years. This is what it means. It means so much.
“All the fans get battered. We get battered for not winning a trophy, not winning anything. We got the first one in a while today and I’m so happy.
“Ever since I came here it’s been ‘Tottenham are a good team but can never get it done’. We got it done.”
Postecoglou has come in for plenty of criticism this season given Spurs’ poor Premier League campaign but Johnson says he has delivered what has been asked of him.
“Listen, he’s done his job,” he said. “He said he wins in his second year and he has. If there’s ever time for a mic drop, I think it’s now. I’ll be looking forward to his interview.
“I can’t thank the manager enough for how much trust he’s had in us because some of the performances this season haven’t been good enough but especially in the Europa League, he has a really good way of getting everyone up for it and it shows.”
And Johnson thanked the fans for their support in a tough campaign, adding: “Tottenham Hotspur finishing 17th in the Premier League isn’t good enough but it’s been an unbelievable Europa run.
“The fans have been so good. Every home game, every away game, they come here. I thought they had the edge on the Man Utd fans to be honest. Hours before, they were all here. It got us through the game.”
