Chelsea’s participation at the Club World Cup brought a trophy and some memorable moments – but what were the costs? Head of the PFA Maheta Molango thinks he knows. In quotes picked up by the Daily Mail, he pointed out that Cole Palmer had struggled for form ever since.

“I was at the training camp of Chelsea when they came back [from the Club World Cup]. They were shattered. This is just the reality” Molango said.

“People say [Palmer] is a millionaire. Yeah, he is, but it doesn’t give you an extra lung or an extra leg.

“It’s come to a stage where [fans say] ‘I want to see Cole Palmer on the pitch because he’s the one who makes me dream’. The reality is that the fans pay right now 100 per cent of the ticket and a lot of time they get 70 per cent if they’re lucky of the show or 60 because players start regulating themselves.”

Chelsea cope with demands – but Palmer struggles

Overall Chelsea seemed to cope pretty well physically with the burden of the Club World Cup, but there’s no doubt that Palmer has been the big loser from it. His injury at the start of the season seemed a direct result of being overplayed so much, and he’s struggled to recover his form in the months since he’s been back playing.

Certainly the touch of magic that elevated him above so many other players in the league isn’t there. We just have to hope it’s able to come back.

The Blues, now on the verge of missing out on the Champions League, are going to be the ones who suffer.

In other news…

The appointment of Liam Rosenior was seen as a bit of a gamble by Chelsea fans, but one pundit likes his style so far.
