Viktor Gyokeres reportedly won’t play for Sporting Clube de Portugal again as he tries to force a move to the Premier League.

The Sweden striker has been heavily linked with Arsenal and Manchester United due to his incredible form in front of goal since leaving Coventry City in 2023.

Gyokeres powered the Lisbon outfit to back-to-back Primeira Liga titles as well as the Portuguese Cup in 2024/25, scoring a remarkable 97 goals in 102 appearances across all competitions.

The 27-year-old has a £85 million (€100m) release clause in his contract. However, it has been claimed that Sporting CP and the player came to a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ that would allow him to leave for a fixed fee of £50.8m (€60m) plus £8.4m (€10m) in add ons.

Earlier this month Sporting president Frederico Varandas denied the existence of such a pact and said they had not received any offers for their star man.

In response, Gyokeres will use the “atomic bomb” of going on strike and is not expected to join up with the squad for pre-season training, according to Portuguese outlet A BOLA.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano adds that Gyokeres has told Varandas of his decision to leave Sporting and has “no intention” to pull on the club’s jersey again.

It’s claimed that the centre-forward is “heartbroken” by Sporting’s decision to renege on their agreement and wants to embark on the “next chapter” of his career.

Hasan Cetinkaya, the agent representing Gyokeres, met with both Arsenal and Man Utd earlier this month. The Red Devils were reportedly told he does not want to move to Old Trafford, while the Gunners are said to have made an initial bid of £46.8m with a possible £8.5m in add-ons.

However, Arsenal are also interested in RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, while Juventus are hoping to capitalise on the transfer saga with a £60m offer for Gyokeres.
