Sebastian Hoeneß voiced his frustration with Bilal El Khannouss after VfB Stuttgart’s defeat to St. Pauli, having substituted the midfielder at half-time.
Despite his recent dip, the 21-year-old was trusted from the start. With Stuttgart trailing at the break after an ineffective display, he was replaced by Jamie Leweling.
“I wasn’t satisfied with his performance. We felt we needed to inject some fresh impetus in that position, and that was the reason for the change,” he said, speaking to Bild after the match.
“I didn’t explain it to him. That wasn’t necessary. We’ll discuss it calmly,” the 43-year-old added.
El Khannouss has struggled to rediscover form since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, where Morocco fell to Senegal at the final hurdle. He has no goal or assist in five outings since rejoining the squad.
The Leicester City loanee has made 25 appearances in all competitions this season, contributing six goals and four assists. There have been reports suggesting the agreement is likely to trigger an obligation to buy.
