Hospitalised Juventus fan identified: ‘He fell face down’ | OneFootball

A 36-year-old Juventus fan is in a medically induced coma at the Molinette Hospital in Turin following clashes between ultras ahead of the Derby della Mole on Sunday: ‘He was right next to me and fell face down,’ a friend said.

Marco Leonardo Basoccu, a 36-year-old accountant from Casale Monferrato who works and lives in Milan, has been identified as the Juventus fan taken to hospital in critical condition on Sunday after clashes between the Bianconeri and Torino ultras before the Turin Derby.

According to Repubblica, Basoccu has been following Juventus games alongside the ultras group Viking in recent months.

Basoccu was rushed to the hospital in critical condition on Sunday, requiring immediate neurosurgery. Surgeons operated on Basoccu until 23:30 CET to remove the large hematoma caused by the violent impact and to limit the possible neurological damage.

The Hospital said in the morning that the patient is in stable condition, but still in a medically induced coma and will undergo a follow-up and a CT scan today.

“The doctors told me we have to wait to understand whether the hematoma will be absorbed or not,” the father of the Juventus fan told Repubblica.

It remains unclear which object struck the Juventus fan on the head. According to police headquarters, Basoccu was likely hit by a glass bottle, while previous reports, largely coming from ultras, suggested he had been hit by a flare launched by police to disperse the Juventus and Torino ultras who were clashing.

Repubblica spoke to a friend of Basoccu who witnessed the incident, but could not clarify which object struck the Juventus supporter: “We were in the street, and I heard what sounded like a bang,” he said.

“Marco was right next to me and he fell face down. He immediately started bleeding heavily.”

After the clashes, Juventus fans who entered the stadium told their players, including captain Manuel Locatelli, that they would have invaded the pitch if the game had been played.

Eventually, the Derby, which ended in a 2-2 draw, began one hour behind schedule with Juventus fans walking out of the away before the rescheduled kick-off as a sign of protest.
