La Liga giants Real Madrid’s plans for the summer transfer window could well be impacted by developments in Germany’s squad at the FIFA World Cup.

As much comes with Los Blancos keeping a close eye on the situation of Nico Schlotterbeck.

Amid an ongoing search for reinforcements at the heart of defence with a view to next season, the Bernabéu brass are widely understood to have earmarked Borussia Dortmund star Schlotterbeck as a leading option.

The 26-year-old – left-footed and entering his prime – is considered the ideal profile to beef up incoming boss José Mourinho’s ranks at the back.

It therefore came as a major source of concern for Real Madrid when Schlotterbeck was forced off prematurely in Germany’s World Cup meeting with Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday.

En route to a 2-1 comeback triumph for his country, the stopper was hooked at the interval.

Fears have since spread that Schlotterbeck may have suffered ligament damage, facing up to a prolonged spell on the sidelines as a result.

Should this prove to be the case, Florentino Pérez and co. are in turn likely to look elsewhere for their final defensive addition of the summer.
