Callum Paterson has impressed at MK Dons following his arrival from Sheffield Wednesday this summer.
Sheffield Wednesday have endured a terrible few months as they wait in hope that owner Dejphon Chansiri will sell the club.
His failure to pay wages on time, which brought EFL sanctions, resulted in a hectic summer window, as boss Danny Rohl departed, along with several first-team players.
Callum Paterson was among them, with the 30-year-old having pulled on the blue-and-white shirt almost 200 times in a five-year period.
The Scotsman became something of a cult hero at Wednesday due to his ability to pop up with vital goals, and he was the type of player who would feature in any position he was asked by the manager.
As well as that, he was a big personality and a leader in the dressing room, but the Owls’ situation, combined with the fact he may not have got the regular game time he wanted, meant a summer switch was on the cards.
Yet, it still came as a real surprise when MK Dons secured the signature of the former Hearts man, as Paul Warne managed to convince Paterson to drop to the fourth tier of English football.
Paterson was among a host of high-profile signings, with many observers tipping MK Dons for automatic promotion this season as a result.
However, even though it’s still very early days, they have only picked up 12 points from their opening nine games, leaving Warne’s side sitting in mid-table.
Despite MK Dons’ struggles as a team, it won’t come as a surprise to any Wednesday fans to hear that Paterson is flourishing in League Two.
As mentioned, many felt it was a real coup for the club to convince the 17-cap Scotland international to drop to that level, and he has backed that up by a very productive start at this new club.
Warne has been utilising Paterson in an attacking role this season, and the player has responded by scoring three goals and registering four assists in nine games.
That means only two players in the entire league have registered more goal contributions at this early stage, which highlights just how impressive Paterson has been.
Of course, the priority for Paterson will always be the team, but he will be delighted at how quickly he has settled into his new surroundings.
Now, it’s about getting some wins on the board consistently, and Paterson will be pivotal if MK Dons are to force their way into the promotion picture over the coming weeks and months.
It remains to be seen whether they can do just that, but you can be sure that all connected to Sheffield Wednesday will be pleased for their popular former player if it does happen.
