How Chelsea ended up with Marc Guiu as third choice striker instead of 8 goal Bournemouth sensation

Just over a year ago, the January transfer window had closed, and Chelsea had not made significant additions to the squad.

The signing of Mathis Amougou was the only first team move made – and he ended up playing just a handful of minutes for the Blues. With just a couple of days left in the window, they were being linked with attacker – Eli Junior Kroupi of Lorient.

The Sun mentioned here that the Blues had “beaten” West Ham and Bournemouth to the signature of the then 18 year old attacking sensation.

Chelsea pick the wrong Ligue 1 option

Mathis Amougou trains for Chelsea for the first time!

We all know what happened next – just a day after that story was published, it was actually Bournemouth who signed him, for a reported £30m fee, with Kroupi staying with Lorient for the rest of the season.

Chelsea held back, and are probably now regretting it. The teenager now has 8 league goals in 19 appearances for the Cherries in his first season, and has become one of the most in demand young players around.

He’s cost £80m or more right now – and it looks likely that someone actually steps up and tests Bournemouth’s resolve at some point.

Of course you can’t get them all right – but taking Amougou rather than Kroupi looks a disaster decision right now. The midfielder has already been sold on to Strasbourg, while Kroupi is set to be a star in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, our third choice striker is Marc Guiu.

There were a lot of questions about Liam Rosenior when he was appointed as Chelsea manager, and he spoke about some of the doubts today.

Rosenior also spoke at some length about the online mockery and the memes going round about him in the early days of his Chelsea spell. Win by win, they’re getting quieter. Let’s hope he gets another today.
