Chelsea have pocketed £8.8million plus their Club World Cup participation fee for reaching the competition’s knockout stages.
The Blues finished as runners up to Flamengo in Group D to set up a round-of-16 meeting with Benfica in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday.
After opening their campaign with a 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC, the Blues lost 3-1 to Flamengo last Friday. However, they made sure of their progression to the last 16 by beating Tunisian outfit ES Tunis 3-0 on Wednesday.
By reaching the knockout stages, the Blues have earned more than £8.8m in prize money, and more is on offer if they make it past Benfica and advance further in the competition.
The 12 European teams at the competition will receive staggered participation fees, with the worst-performing European side to receive £9.9m and the best earning as much as £29.6m once the tournament has finished.
Each group-stage win in the competition is worth £1.5m, while progression to the round of 16 is worth £5.8m on top of the money gained for group-stage victories.
Chelsea won two of their three group games, meaning £3m on top of that £5.8m has earnt them £8.8m in performance-related prize money so far in the United States.
Another £10.1m will follow if Enzo Maresca’s men beat Benfica to reach the quarter-finals in what will be the first meeting between Chelsea and the Portuguese side since the 2013 Europa League final.
In total, FIFA are awarding $1billion in prize money at the Club World Cup, with the eventual champions able to pocket as much as £97m if they win all their matches.
