One of the more noteworthy inter-Championship transfers of this summer's deadline day was that of Luke Woolfenden from Ipswich Town to Coventry City. Here's what the Sky Blues paid for him.
On an extremely busy transfer deadline day, one of the more notable moves between Championship clubs was that of defender Luke Woolfenden from Ipswich Town to Coventry City.
Woolfenden, who was born in Ipswich and first joined the club at 11 years of age, left Portman Road for the CBS Arena on the final day of the summer transfer window, a decision which will have delighted Coventry manager Frank Lampard.
But with PSR being such a hot topic, clubs at this level have to be careful about how they spend their money, especially those like Coventry who are not in receipt of Premier League parachute payments.
And Coventry seem to have struck gold with a relatively modest fee for an accomplished and experienced defender.
GiveMeSport's Ben Jacobs has revealed that the fee that Coventry are paying to take Luke Woolfenden to the CBS Arena is £4 million, signing a three-year contract with his new club and ending a 15-year period at Portman Road.
This fee has been described by the Coventry Evening Telegraph as a 'total package', so it can be presumed that there are no further add-ons to add to this amount.
Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna had previously said that he wanted to keep Woolfenden at Portman Road for this season, but that "Luke’s made it clear for quite a while that he wants to go, so we’ll see what that situation ends up in."
The subsequent relatively modest transfer fee hints at the player's desire to leave the club, and the fact that McKenna was saying this after Woolfenden was left out of their first team squad for their 2-2 draw with Derby County, confirmed this.
After 15 years at Portman Road, the departure of Luke Woolfenden from Portman Road will leave a big hole in the Ipswich Town defence for the coming months.
He'd only signed a new contract extension in January, extending his connection to Portman Road until 2027 with the option of a further year.
Ipswich have cover in that position, but Woolfenden's experience won't be easy to replace.
Having made his first-team debut for them in August 2017, he ran up almost 200 League appearances for them over eight seasons, and was there through their ascent from League One to the Premier League and their relegation back to the Championship.
But Ipswich's loss is Coventry's gain.
The Sky Blues had already had a bid for the player rejected a couple of weeks earlier, but Woolfenden's desire to leave the club has been the determining factor in them getting their man.
It's a gamble for Ipswich, but it's an excellent deal for Frank Lampard and Coventry, whose unbeaten start to their Championship season sees them in a good position to challenge for promotion again this season.
