Middlesbrough could be in line for a big pay-day after inserting a sell-on clause as part of Morgan Rogers' move to Aston Villa in January 2024.
Middlesbrough have had a decent record in the transfer market over the years, although they will still feel they can improve as they try to help Kim Hellberg.
Even though generous owner Steve Gibson has put serious funds into the club over the years, Boro aren’t in a position to splash the cash like some rival clubs, with PSR also a consideration.
Therefore, they have to be smart with who they bring in, as they focus on not only the impact the player can make for the team, but also the resale value.

Arguably the standout deal from Boro’s perspective on that front is Morgan Rogers.
They brought the attacking midfielder in from Man City for around £1m, and his impressive form over a six-month period prompted Aston Villa to sign Rogers for a deal worth up to £16m.
That represented a huge profit in a short space of time, and whilst it’s a shame for Boro that Rogers couldn’t help them reach the Premier League, it was excellent business.
Since then, his career has gone from strength-to-strength under Unai Emery, and Rogers will hope to help England win the World Cup this summer.
As well as a hefty fee, those involved in the transfer at Middlesbrough inserted a sell-on clause as part of the agreement - and that could net the Teesside outfit a hefty windfall this summer.
It’s unclear exactly what percentage Boro are entitled to, but with Villa valuing Rogers at £100m, it’s likely to be a significant sum.
A sell-on clause is usually only applied to profit, and if Villa have paid all the add-ons as part of the initial deal, a £100m sale would mean the Premier League side have made a profit of £84m.
So, if Boro had a 10% sell-on, they would receive £8.4m, whilst a 25% sell-on clause would see Boro net over £20m. Again, it’s unclear what the exact percentage is, but it could enhance Hellberg’s budget this summer.
With that in mind, all connected to Middlesbrough will surely hope Rogers gets a major move this summer, and the chances of that happening increase if he impresses for England.

If the attacker can become a key part of Thomas Tuchel’s XI, and the Three Lions lift the trophy, it will only increase his profile, and it may mean the £100m price tag is met.
Even so, Rogers is sure to be in-demand due to his outstanding performances for Villa over recent years, although they will be reluctant to sell their key man.
The club have made major strides under Emery, and if they do secure Champions League football once again this season, which looks increasingly likely, then it may strengthen their hand when it comes to negotiations.
That shows there are a lot of moving parts heading into the summer window, but if Rogers is one of the headline transfers ahead of the 2026/27 season, then Middlesbrough will be among the winners of the mega-money deal.
