We looked at how striker Emil Riis' wages have increased since his summer move from Preston North End to Bristol City.

As they look to improve on last season's sixth-placed finish, Bristol City will be hoping that new signing Emil Riis can score the goals to fire them to promotion to the Premier League.

Bristol City reached the Championship play-offs for the first time since 2008 last season, but they suffered a record-breaking 6-0 aggregate defeat to Sheffield United at the semi-final stage, and there was further frustration to come for supporters as head coach Liam Manning opted to depart the club in June to take over at Norwich City.

However, while some Robins supporters would have feared a return to mid-table mediocrity after Manning's departure, new boss Gerhard Struber's strong start to life at Ashton Gate has offered hope that another promotion push could be on the cards this season, and the early signs are that the Austrian has done some shrewd summer transfer business.

City may have only brought in five new signings this summer, with Joe Lumley, Radek Vitek, Neto Borges and Adam Randall joining Riis in making the move to the South West, while Yu Hirakawa made his loan deal permanent, but it appears they have added extra quality to an already strong squad.

Riis opted to call time on his five-year spell at Preston North End this summer in order to complete his switch to the Robins, and with a number of other top Championship side believed to have been chasing him, it was a big coup for the club to win the race for his signature.

Bristol City beat Sheffield United and Coventry City to Emil Riis after Preston North End exit

Riis joined Preston from Danish side Randers in October 2020, and he went on to score 46 goals and provide 12 assists in 186 appearances for the Lilywhites over the next five years before his departure this summer.

The 27-year-old was not always the most consistent scorer for North End, while he also struggled with injuries at times during his spell at Deepdale, but his record of 12 goals in 45 league games last season for a side who only narrowly avoided relegation suggested that he could be a real asset for a team with promotion ambitions.

After leaving Preston at the end of his contract back in May, Riis was said to be on the radar of Sheffield United and Coventry City, but Bristol City landed one of the bargains of the summer in the Championship when they signed the striker on a free transfer in late June.

Riis' move to Ashton Gate raised a few eyebrows given that there was little speculation about the deal ahead of the official announcement, but the Dane revealed that he could not turn down the chance to join what he described as an "exciting club" with "the right ambitions for me".

It is fair to say that Riis made a strong start to his Robins career, and as he continues to make a big impression on supporters of his new club, we looked at how his current wages compare to what he was earning at Preston.

How Emil Riis' Bristol City wages compare to Preston North End salary

According to Capology, Riis takes home £16,500-a-week and £858,000-a-year at Bristol City, although it should be stressed that those figures are an estimate.

As Riis was said to be earning £9,615-a-week and £500,000-a-year at Preston, his salary has significantly increased following his move to Ashton Gate, with a rise of almost £7,000-a-week and £358,000-a-year.

Despite only joining the club this summer, Riis is thought to be the Robins' third-highest earner, with only defenders Luke McNally and Neto Borges receiving higher wages than him (both £20,000-a-week), but as the latter is on loan from Middlesbrough, it is possible that the Teesside outfit are contributing to some of his salary.

There are many City players on a similar wage to Riis, with Rob Atkinson, Cameron Pring, Joe Williams, Jason Knight, Harry Cornick and Scott Twine all estimated to be taking home £15,000-a-week, but they were all at the club last season, so it underlines how highly the striker is rated by the hierarchy that he immediately became one of the biggest earners in the squad.

The Robins are a well-run, sustainable club under the ownership of Steve Lansdown, and they are not known for paying excessive wages, but their investment in Riis will be worth every penny if he can score the goals to lead them to the promised land.
