Rangers and Celtic are both reportedly interested in Sheffield United forward Tyrese Campbell this summer

Sheffield United have had a turbulent campaign, with the Blades looking destined to remain in the Championship for another year, as the top six places look set to elude them.

Following their play-off final defeat at the hands of Sunderland, Sheffield United decided to dismiss Chris Wilder from his post in the Bramall Lane dugout and appointed former Southampton and Hull City boss Ruben Selles as his replacement.

The Spaniard oversaw a busy summer window, with a change in strategy focusing on data-driven signings from across Europe, specifically in Bulgaria, being implemented, along with a scattergun approach elsewhere.

Former Luton Town players Mark McGuiness, Tahith Chong, and Chiedozie Ogbene joined, whilst the likes of Tyler Bindon, Louie Barry, and Ben Godfrey joined on loan, though few of those have been successes.

Selles was dismissed after just six games and replaced by Wilder, just months after his previous dismissal, and though he has stabilised things since then, it remains a disappointing year in South Yorkshire.

With the next transfer window on the horizon, rumours are beginning to fly about, such as Femi Seriki's link to Everton, Sydie Peck's link to Nottingham Forest, and, most recently, Tyrese Campbell's link to both Celtic and Rangers.

How much Tyrese Campbell earns at Sheffield United as Celtic and Rangers lurk

Since joining Sheffield United in the summer of 2024 on a free transfer after his contract with Stoke City expired, Tyrese Campbell has blown hot and cold during his time in South Yorkshire.

Son of the late Kevin Campbell, Tyrese has struggled with injuries throughout his career, which has limited his time on the pitch with both the Potters and the Blades, but has shown glimpses of his talent despite this, with 47 goals and 17 assists in 209 Championship games to date.

The 26-year-old has just six goals and two assists in 34 league appearances this season, balancing minutes up front alongside the likes of Tom Cannon, Patrick Bamford, and Danny Ings, and has once again been linked with a move to Glasgow, with Celtic and Rangers reigniting their long-term interest in the forward.

Even as far back as January 2020, both Scottish giants were vying for his signature, in what was his first full season in the second tier at the time, and now, over six years later, he could finally make the move north of the border this summer.

According to estimates from Capology, Campbell currently earns around £15k per week at Bramall Lane, which both Scottish sides would be more than able to afford. Given he hasn't exactly had a standout campaign, it's unlikely he would be able to demand a bumper pay rise, either.

With one year remaining on his current deal with the Blades at the end of this season, it's unclear whether Campbell's long-term future lies in South Yorkshire or not, as with the club needing to get some names off the books this summer due to the expiry of parachute payments, the 26-year-old could be one of those casualties.

Chris Wilder must make a decision regarding Tyrese Campbell's future this summer amid Rangers and Celtic interest

The summer window is of the utmost importance for Sheffield United and Wilder, who must navigate themselves through choppy waters once more.

Fortunately for Blades fans, there are few people in the world better suited to this upcoming scenario than Wilder, having already proven he can guide his boyhood club through difficult situations before.

Big decisions must be made imminently regarding the future of numerous players at the club, with Campbell being one of them.

Although nowhere near the top earner at Bramall Lane, with Japhet Tanganga's estimated £35k per week more than double his £15k per week, Campbell's future remains uncertain despite this.

What sort of fee the Blades would command for a potential switch remains unclear, but with a year remaining on his current terms, they are not in the best position to drive up a fee.

With both Cannon and Ings also struggling to impress, Wilder likely can't afford to lose all three, as he must make a huge decision on Campbell in the next few months.
