According to Fabrizio Romano, the Baggies are closing in on a deal to bring the defender to the Hawthorns on a permanent basis.

The centre-back has fallen down the pecking order of the Premier League side, and he spent last season on loan with Sunderland.

The 27-year-old Welsh international featured 38 times in the regular Championship campaign as the Black Cats earned promotion to the top flight through the play-offs.

Here we use estimated figures from Capology to see how much West Brom may need to pay Mepham in wages as he nears a move to the Midlands outfit…

Mepham joined the Cherries in January 2019, making the switch from Brentford after three years in the Bees’ first team squad.

The Welshman helped the club finish 14th in the Premier League in his first half-season at the club, but relegation was suffered 12 months later.

The centre-back was unable to cement himself as a regular part of the first team squad under Scott Parker, who guided Bournemouth to promotion back to the top flight in 2022.

Mepham has been earning £35,000 per week through his time with the club, despite falling down the pecking order even further under Andoni Iraola.

The defender made 10 appearances in the Premier League in the 2023/24 campaign before being loaned out to Sunderland last summer.

Mepham proved himself as a top defender in the Championship during his time in Régis Le Bris’ side, with the team coming fourth in the table.

The 27-year-old came off the bench early in the play-off final in place of an injured Luke O’Nien, playing 83 minutes of their 2-1 victory over Sheffield United.

But no agreement was made with Bournemouth to remain at the Stadium of Light, which has opened the door for his impending arrival in Ryan Mason’s squad.

It has been reported that a fee has been agreed between the two clubs, as well as personal terms with the player, and Mepham will be arriving to bolster West Brom's defensive options following the sale of Torbjorn Heggem to Bologna and Kyle Bartley's retirement.

How Chris Mepham's Bournemouth wages compare to West Brom's top earners

West Brom’s highest paid player in their current squad is American forward Daryl Dike, who joined in the 2022 January transfer window.

Injuries have plagued the striker over the last three-and-a-half years, with the 25-year-old earning a weekly wage of £32,308 during that time.

If Mepham is going to join West Brom at the same level of salary, then he could become the club’s new best paid player at a £35,000 per week wage.

He could become only the second player in the squad to earn more than £30,000-a-week, with the joint-second highest salary currently £25,000-a-week from Jed Wallace and Darnell Furlong.

The likes of Karlan Grant, Alex Mowatt and Jayson Molumby all also earn £20,000 per week from the Championship side.
