Arsenal and Chelsea go toe-to-toe tonight in the first leg of the Women’s Champions League quarter-final, a potentially season-defining tie for both sides.

This London derby carries more meaning than most. For all their domestic dominance, European success has eluded Chelsea for years, despite their attempts to sign as many of the competition’s former winners as possible.

In four of their last five campaigns, they have been eliminated by a formidable Barcelona side, losing 8-2 on aggregate last season.

That same Barcelona side were then pipped in the final by Arsenal, rubbing plenty of salt into Chelsea’s wounds.

Arsenal have built on their success this season, and could go second in the WSL if they win their two games in hand.

The Blues, meanwhile, are in danger of recording their worst league finish since narrowly dodging relegation in 2013, though they have successfully defended their League Cup title and remain in the running for the FA Cup.

Arsenal will smell blood in the water as they look to inflict another humiliating defeat on their most bitter rivals.

They will chase that result without the aid of the injured Leah Williamson, while the Australian trio of Steph Catley, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Caitlin Foord will miss out as they make their way home from the Asian Cup.

Chelsea are similarly injury hit, though: only eight players appeared in their open training session on Monday.
