Recent form

Despite inconsistencies this season, Atletico Madrid still sit third in La Liga. After narrowly missing out on automatic last 16 qualification, the Spanish side comfortably overcame Club Brugge to progress to this round. Diego Simeone’s side also reached the Copa del Rey final after beating Barcelona 4-0 in the first leg, although they did lose the second leg 3-0.

Tottenham’s free fall in the Premier League has continued and they now find themselves in a genuine relegation battle having lost five games in a row. Manager Thomas Frank has now been replaced by interim Igor Tudor. However, the Croatian has not fared any better in the role and his position is already under threat. Despite their domestic troubles, Spurs have impressed in Europe so far this campaign.

What’s been said?

“I don’t know what it’s related to,” said Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone on his side being favourites in the tie. “If it’s related to the fact they came in fourth, then we are not really favourites.”

Igor Tudor insisted: “It’s a beautiful game to play tomorrow, against a totally different competition than the Premier League. It’s a good experience from this season and past games. Let’s see what happens tomorrow.

“Well, since I found out he was coming to the club, I knew he was going to be a manager that would help us a lot,” said Spurs defender Pedro Porro on the interim manager. “All of the players know that we need to be on the right path with him. Again, he is only in for three weeks and he just needs to learn everything about us and the other way around, but we’re on the right path.”
