Leverkusen have been in encouraging form since Kasper Hjulmand took over from Erik ten Hag, with wins against Manchester City in the Champions League and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga bringing them into the top four of the league. However, they were defeated 2-0 by Augsburg on the weekend.
Newcastle head into this match off the back of a four match unbeaten run in the Premier League, which included wins against Manchester City and Everton. However they were defeated 2-1 away to Marseille in their previous Champions League fixture.
Eddie Howe looked ahead to a big week for his side, with the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland this weekend:
“It has been an intense week. We finished the game on Saturday, and immediately prepare for the next one. We are having to cram a lot of work into a short period of time. We are excited by this one and looking forward to the challenge. It’s a tough game for us.”
Kasper Hjulmand on the challenge of facing Newcastle:
“Newcastle United are a great team with a lot of power. A lot of pressing forward, very physical, very good at set-pieces. So a difficult opponent, but so are we, when we play our best. After our two Champions League away wins [against Benfica and Manchester City], we have received a boost. Now we want to take a really big step [against Newcastle United].”
