England welcome Uruguay to Wembley Stadium on Friday evening, offering Thomas Tuchel a valuable opportunity to experiment with his squad ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
Marcelo Bielsa also returns to England with Uruguay, having become a cult hero in Yorkshire during his three-and-a-half-year spell with Leeds United.
Here’s everything you need to know about the game…
7:45pm UK time, Friday March 27
TV channel: ITV1
Streaming: ITVX
England (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Livramento, Tomori, Maguire, Hall; Henderson, Wharton; Madueke, Palmer, Rashford; Solanke
Uruguay (4-2-3-1): Muslera; Varela, Araujo, Giménez, Viña; Valverde, Ugarte; Cannobio, De Arrascaeta, M.Araújo, Aguirre
England last tasted defeat 290 days ago and have won their last six consecutive matches.
Tuchel’s side have also kept a clean sheet in each of those games, highlighting their defensive solidity heading into the summer tournament.
He has used this window to split the squad, resting several key players until the game against Japan next week. Dean Henderson, Dan Burn, Marc Guéhi, Ezri Konsa, Nico O’Reilly, Elliot Anderson, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon, Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane will all play no part in Friday’s fixture.
This decision opens the door for players such as James Garner, Noni Madueke and Adam Wharton to push their case for World Cup selection.
Uruguay arrive in less convincing form. They suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Mauricio Pochettino’s USA in their last outing.
The last meeting between these sides came in the group stage at the 2014 World Cup, when a Luis Suarez brace cancelled out Wayne Rooney’s strike.
Tuchel on leaving Trent Alexander-Arnold out of the squad in favour of Ben White: “It’s just a choice. A sporting choice. Maybe a hard choice. And maybe to a degree unfair.
“The choice was for [Ben] White because I saw him play in the [Carabao Cup] final, in the Champions League match before and he was back to his old self. It was a chance to meet him in person and see how he reacts with the group.
“I know what Trent can give us so the choice was for Ben and Tino Livramento, to stick with the guys who had a good camp with us in September, November, December. They also need the minutes, there are a lot of players in this position, Djed Spence as well, who also fight for a ticket. I didn’t want to leave them out.
“I know that it creates noise when you leave a player like Trent out. We had a call, I tried to explain the situation. He just has to accept it.”
Bielsa on facing England: “Every match is an opportunity.
“Obviously I’m not unaware of the quality of the teams we’re up against, but I always prefer that the games we play in demand the very best from us.
“Competing against an English team, given the history of English football and the type of competition in which 90% of their players participate, is always a test that demands the best from us to overcome.”
