Life has been good for NJ/NY Gotham FC in the NWSL.  But now, the team must turn their focus to the CONCACAF W Champions Cup.  The Bats are heading to Mexico to take on someone slightly familiar: Club América Femenil.  The two sides faced off in last year’s Champions Cup semifinals, in which the NWSL ladies came out on top.  And of course, they eventually took home the first-ever trophy of the competition.

When Gotham met Club América last year, they were struggling a little bit.  They were winless in three league games, while the Liga MX Femenil side entered the battle after finishing the Clausura in first place.  This time, the NJ/NY side is in the middle of an unbeaten streak in the NWSL, while their opponents again finished the Clausura in first place and just won their postseason tournament.

In other words, it might be difficult to pinpoint what will happen in this semifinal battle.  But the Bats won last year when their form was not their best, and this time they are entering in a better spot.  If Ann-Katrin Berger can have a superb game, and if the backline, regardless of who starts, continues the lights-out defending, then Gotham could easily find themselves back in the finals.

Juan Carlos Amorós might rotate some of his players, though, despite the fact that a trophy is on the line.  His team cannot earn more silverware if they fall against América.  Still, the good news is that the depth is even better this season, and Gotham FC remains a strong side, even with some of their injuries.

Final notes

Again, the head coach might rotate some of his players.  But he should start Jaedyn Shaw, who keeps on scoring, and Esther González, who has been struggling in front of the net.  The Spaniard remains important to the attack and makes a difference in the offensive buildup.  Gotham FC needs the two forwards in the lineup.
