For the fifth week out of the last six, New York City FC will play a midweek game, continuing their insane period before the break for the World Cup.  After beating the New York Red Bulls in the last round of the U.S. Open Cup, the Boys in Blue will now face the Columbus Crew in the quarterfinals, aiming to make the semifinals of the oldest soccer tournament in the United States for the first time.

Moreover, it has not been that long since NYCFC ended the winless streak in Major League Soccer, doing so against the Columbus Crew.  Ten days will separate the two games, and the Boys in Blue will aim to beat the Ohio side again.  The difference this time, though, is that Columbus will be with a different head coach.  Henrik Rydström was fired on Sunday after the team’s poor start to the 2026 season, and Laurent Courtois is taking over as the interim head coach.

As such, this could be a great opportunity for NYCFC to take advantage of their opponent’s struggles.  Plus, Columbus is winless in their last four MLS matches.  They have not won since their last Open Cup game, and the Pigeons do not want that to change.

Alas, Pascal Jansen might have to put out the best squad that he can, with maybe just a couple of players rotated.  With a chance to go where no Bronx team has gone before, how could he not play his best players?  This could be a chance to win another trophy, but NYCFC must make it out of the quarterfinals first.

Final notes

While the focus must be on the match, a dark shadow will hang over the team.  Maxi Moralez was badly injured in the weekend’s Hudson River Derby, and many assume it is his ACL or another devastating knee injury.  Fans are still waiting for confirmation, but now NYCFC will have to continue on with the 2026 campaign without the veteran.
