Since losing 4-3 to Barcelona to all but hand them last season’s La Liga title, Real Madrid have won three consecutive league games. This is their first competitive game since beating Real Sociedad 2-0 in their final league match of the season.
Al-Hilal won four of their last five in the Saudi Pro League, drawing the other match, but could only finish as runners-up to Al-Ittihad. In those five matches they scored 16 goals, but conceded three times in two separate games.
Real Madrid(4-3-3): Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Asencio, Huijsen, Garcia; Valverde, Tchouameni, Bellingham; Rodrygo, Vinicius, Mbappe.
Al-Hilal (3-5-2): Bono; Tambakti, Koulibaly, Al-Bulayhi; Cancelo, Kanno, Neves, Milinkovic-Savic, S. Al-Dawsari; Malcolm, Mitrovic.
Xabi Alonso spoke of his delight at having both Trent-Alexander Arnold and Dean Huijsen through the door in time for the Club World Cup: “It is a privilege to have such top players. Trent is more flexible in positions, but Carva [Carvajal] has a lot of personality and competitiveness. The initial impact of Trent has been very good.
“We’ve been working on this project since day one and I’m very happy with the squad, with the signings. Huijsen and Trent are great players, people who don’t need a lot of training or a lot of theory. They learn quickly. A process is underway, and we’ll start tomorrow.”
Simone Inzaghi spoke about trying something different following his exit at Inter: “I accepted the challenge and stepped out of my comfort zone after several years at Inter. I want to change my way of thinking, my style of play and try new things. There was no other team I wanted to coach, so I chose Al-Hilal.”
